Musculoskeletal ultrasound is becoming an increasingly popular tool as an extension of the physical examination in diagnosing rheumatic conditions and assisting in ultrasound-guided procedures. Classification criteria involve the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in the current guidelines for vasculitis and gout. Unfortunately, reimbursement for musculoskeletal ultrasound is continually at risk of being cut, creating a potential barrier to access to care. Different practice characteristics and locations present unique challenges in establishing and successfully implementing a musculoskeletal ultrasound in clinical practice. This session will provide an overview and framework for incorporating this tool in a variety of clinical settings: independent practice, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and academics. The discussion will include how to select equipment and space, image storing, billing, and how to maintain success.
