Dysregulated cell death and exposure of self-antigens is essential in development of autoimmunity. Here we will highlight recent advances in the field of cell death and discuss novel forms of cell death, including ferroptosis, necrosis, and pyroptosis, and their role in causing inflammation and exposing disease-relevant autoantigens.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review distinct modes of cell death in the setting of rheumatic disease and the kidney.
  • Describe how cell death processes contribute to inflammation.
  • Discuss how cell death may participate in development of autoimmunity.
