The goal of this session is to discuss visual science communication, including the important role of graphic design in the dissemination of rheumatology research and medical education using real-world examples. The talk will outline more effective strategies for communicating science to a broad audience, including researchers, clinicians, trainees, and patients in rheumatology. The speakers will use case studies to illustrate methods of improving scientific figures embedded in presentations and publications, to highlight the impact of graphical and visual abstracts on disseminating research, and to demonstrate the efficacy of infographics in medical education. This session includes two speakers with experience in graphic design within rheumatology. Ariella Coler-Reilly, creator of ariellastudies.com, is an MD PhD candidate with graduate training in science communication who has been published on the importance of graphical and visual abstracts in rheumatology. Dr. Mithu Maheswaranathan, creator of @RheumOnePagers on Twitter and rheumonepagers.com, is a rheumatologist at Duke School of Medicine and pioneer in infographics for both #FOAMed (free, open-access medical education) and patient education. Through this session, the speakers will demonstrate principles of more effective visual science communication and provide some initial take-home guidance for the audience to be able to incorporate in their presentations and figures. This talk will be applicable broadly to professional development and education in rheumatology for both researchers and clinician educators, including use of graphics to improve how we disseminate science to researchers and clinicians, as well as explain content to learners across the training spectrum.
