The field of rheumatology is well known for being highly collaborative in nature, placing value on the care provided by prevention, rehabilitation, nutrition, and mental health providers. Increasingly, there have been calls for more collaboration between members of the rheumatology team, including patients as part of the care team, both in clinical shared decision making and the research that supports care. The 2015 ACR US Workforce Study predicted a significant deficit of rheumatologists throughout the US that has placed an urgent focus on shifting aspects of patient care to other members of the healthcare team. Despite the need and interest in interprofessional collaboration in rheumatology, utilization is far from universal. In this session, we will review roles of the interprofessional rheumatology care team, including the financial and outcome data, as well as rehabilitation competencies as they support collaborative practice. We will discuss institutional, clinical, research, and educational interventions and strategies to address identified barriers in interprofessional collaboration. Finally, we will hear from a small panel of US patients who have been engaged in collaborative rheumatologic care to help gain further insight into future additional solutions.
