There are unique benefits/innovations, limitations, and challenges to consider related to equitable inclusion of vulnerable populations, including patients with Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and aging adults, in clinical studies. An expert panel of speakers will discuss inclusion of underrepresented adults (women/men, older adults, children, language barriers, lower socioeconomic status, race, and ethnicity) in the context of clinical trials, observational studies (e.g., surveys, registries), and claims-based/population-level research to help identify obstacles and create opportunities to mitigate this growing unmet need.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand unique analytic challenges in generalizability related to conducting clinical research in rheumatic conditions and craft nuanced approaches to mitigate these issues.
  • Describe gaps in and challenges related to the inclusion of vulnerable patients in clinical research.
  • Evaluate evidence from lupus trials to develop strategies to increase representation in future studies.
