My primary areas of interest have focused on elucidating causes of complex diseases by studying genetic and environmental contributions to them. I primarily study etiological factors for autoimmune diseases and selected cancers. My lab is studying genetic factors influencing the development of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, autoimmune vasculopathies and primary schlerosing polyangiitis. We also study genetic factors influencing lung cancer, melanoma and glioma. I currently lead an international project with investigators in several countries including the U.S.A., Canada, France, the U.K., and Germany that is dissecting genetic, environmental and behavioral causes of lung cancer to understand better its etiology and to develop biomarkers for earlier detection. I also work on grants that are improving models for susceptibility to cancer among carriers of p53 mutations and seek to understand genetic factors influencing liver cancer and lung cancer progression. I also lead the technology component of an NIEHS center grant focusing on environmental and epigenetic causes of disease.
