Karla L. Miller, M.D., is clinical associate professor in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Utah--Department of Internal Medicine, as well as the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center. She received her medical degree from the University of New Mexico-School of Medicine, and completed both her internal medicine residency and rheumatology fellowship training at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She is a rheumatologist whose career has focused on providing high-quality rheumatology services to patients in the management of chronic diseases within her specialty, with a specific interest in osteoporosis, quality improvement initiatives, and medical student education. Her work includes quality initiatives and LEAN projects through the University of Utah to improve quality and standardization of bone density reporting and develop clinical pathways for addressing secondary fracture prevention. Her interest in osteoporosis also extends to osteoporosis risk identification and primary prevention in rural Veterans and she developed a primary prevention, population-based virtual osteoporosis pilot clinic through funding from the Office of Rural Health. The program was adopted by the SLC VA Medical Center and she continues to oversee ongoing access to virtual osteoporosis screening and management for rural and urban Veterans.
