Wolfgang Schmidt, born and educated in Berlin, Germany, holds degrees in internal and emergency medicine. He became a senior physician at Immanuel Krankenhaus Berlin in 1993 and obtained his rheumatology degree in 1996. Since 2005, he holds the position of deputy director and rheumatology fellowship director at this hospital.
In 2023 he will receive the designation of ACR Master. He led ultrasound workshops at annual ACR meetings from 1999 to 2009 and organized several EULAR ultrasound courses since 2002, including initiating the EULAR Ultrasound Trainer Courses in 2012.
His scientific work focuses on musculoskeletal ultrasound and vasculitis imaging. He habilitated in 2002, becoming a professor of Charité University Medicine in Berlin in 2010 and pioneered the ultrasound halo sign in GCA (Lancet 1995), published the first ultrasound study in GCA (NEJM 1997), and introduced the first ultrasound GCA fast-track clinic in the late 1990s, seeing 90-100 new GCA patients annually. He guides international vasculitis imaging guidelines, heads the OMERACT vasculitis ultrasound group, and leads phase 2 and 3 GCA trials.
