Dr. Joy Buie is a translational immunologist and health disparities researcher with a career spanning over 14 years. Currently serving as the Director of Research at the Lupus Foundation of America, she has made notable strides in addressing racial and ethnic disparities in disease outcomes.
Dr. Buie's academic journey is steeped in multidisciplinary learning. She earned her Ph.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina, followed by a Master’s in Clinical Research and a Bachelor's in Nursing. Early in her career, Dr. Buie's interest in the role of epigenetics in vascular remodeling led to her involvement in the American Heart Association’s Strategically Funded Research Network. Here, she successfully addressed disparities in stroke outcomes by creating culturally congruent workflows. These pioneering strategies ensured continuous engagement with acute stroke patients, significantly improving their treatment outcomes. During this fellowship, Dr. Buie learned the role of clear, patient-centric, consistent communication for establishing trust and respect in the patient-provider dynamic. Her work at the Lupus Foundation of America continues to address communication domains important for optimizing health outcomes in lupus.
