Manuel Ugarte-Gil, MD, MSc

Manuel F. Ugarte-Gil is the coordinator of the Lupus Unit at Hospital Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen and the Grupo Peruano de Estudio de Enfermedades Autoinmunes Sistémicas (Universidad Científica del Sur). He was trained in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at the Almenara hospital, where the majority of his research has taken and is taking place. In January 2012, with the strong support of his department chair, Dr. Ugarte-Gil started the Almenara Lupus Cohort and the Lupus Unit. Currently, this cohort includes about 400 SLE patients who are being care for in our department. With data from this cohort and under his leadership, his group has already published twenty-one manuscripts. Current fellows actively participate on the evaluation of the cohort patients.

In 2013, he also became a formal member of GLADEL (Grupo Latino Americano de Estudio de Lupus). As a member of GLADEL young scientists, he has been working under the guidance of Dr. Bernardo Pons-Estel and Prof. Graciela S. Alarcón. As a GLADEL member, Dr. Ugarte-Gil has been able to participate in the publication of thirteen manuscripts. Also, he is the coordinator of one of the centers of the new GLADEL cohort.

In total he has authored or coauthored more than 100 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. He has also participated in the DORIS (International Task Force on Definitions of Remission in SLE) meetings and he has worked in several projects with the LUMINA cohort.
