Dr. Masataka Kuwana is a professor of allergy and rheumatology and a director of scleroderma and myositis at the center of excellence at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, Japan. He was trained at Keio University and joined the Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, as a postdoctoral fellow. Since completion of the fellowship program, Dr. Kuwana has spent his professional career focusing on basic and clinical aspects of systemic sclerosis, myositis, and a variety of systemic and organ-specific autoimmune diseases. He has published more than 480 peer-reviewed scientific articles and written more than 10 book chapters. He is listed as an editorial board member of 7 peer-reviewed journals, and serves as an Editor-in-Chief of Modern Rheumatology and the Journal of Scleroderma and Related Disorders. Dr. Kuwana is considered an internationally recognized leading expert in systemic sclerosis, myositis, pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, and autoimmunity.
