Dr Oakley is a staff specialist rheumatologist at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle Australia and holds a conjoint academic position at the University of Newcastle. He has conducted research evaluating arthroscopic and biomechanical assessments in osteoarthritis and studies of cardiovascular biomarkers in rheumatoid arthritis. He is presently exploring the role of connective tissue biomechanical properties in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.
