Dr. Amanda King is a medical graduate of the University of the West Indies. She pursued postgraduate studies in Scotland and rheumatology at the Centre for Rheumatic Diseases in Glasgow. She returned to St. Lucia in 1995 and remains the only rheumatologist there. She was keen to deliver a patient-centred team approach to patients and so founded The St. Lucia Arthritis and Lupus association (SLALA) in 1997. This group provides education, motivation and support to the rheumatic disease community. In 2002 Dr. King introduced Stanford’s Arthritis Self Management program to St. Lucia through SLALA, to empower patients. She cross-trained in 2005 as a Master Trainer to provide the Chronic Disease Self management Program.
She collaborated with Caribbean rheumatologists to create The Caribbean association for rheumatology (CAR) to provide education, research and advocacy across the region. Dr. King is the founding president and the second fellow, after Professor Eon Nigel Harris.
In 2011 she received the award for most outstanding physician from The St. Lucia Medical and Dental Association and in 2017 Dr. King was the recipient of the St. Lucia Medal of Merit (Gold), a national award for her contribution to Medicine.
She trained a general practitioner as part of the team and this doctor now has a diploma in rheumatology. Since COVID Dr. King has been providing teleconsults for countries without rheumatologists and is identifying interested HCPs to work with CAR to improve care.
