Dr. Varkas' scientific interest and research focuses on spondyloarthritis (SpA) in general, SpA related to gut inflammation, and the differentiation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesions in SpA and non-SpA populations, with emphasis on the unmet needs of patients and the field of rheumatology. As part of the University Hospital Ghent team, she is involved in the BeGiant cohort, a prospective cohort of SpA patients, and investigator initiated imaging and early remission induction trials such as SPARTACUS and GO GUT, as well as commercial clinical trials not limited to SpA and RA.
Dr Varkas is a member of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) clinical research sub-committee, team leader and full member of the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS), member of the EMerging EULAR NETwork (EMEUNET) and board member of the Royal Belgian Society of Rheumatology and and the EMerging EULAR NETwork (EMEUNET). She has received multiple research grants from ASAS and KBVR, as well as been a Chair and/or speaker at national and international congresses. She has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, Arthritis & Rheumatology and Rheumatology, and is a peer reviewer for the Rheumatology and RMD Open journals.
