Elisabet Svenungsson is senior consultant and professor of rheumatology at the Karolinska University Hospital, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. She has 29 years of clinical experience as a specialist in rheumatology and internal medicine, and many years of experience as a teacher in the field of rheumatology with emphasize on systemic inflammatory diseases, in particular systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).
Elisabet’s research group is focused on SLE, APS autoimmune related cardiovascular disease (CVD) and subgroups of SLE. Her group has contributed to clinical and genetic studies in SLE and she has investigated different susceptibility factors to SLE-related CVD, where antiphospholipid antibodies and lupus nephritis have been identified as important contributors. Elisabet´s ongoing research focuses on further characterizing CVD, autoantibody profiles and genetics, as well as on neurological and renal manifestations and quality of life issues. A more recent general research interest is in SLE pathogenesis and SLE sub-phenotypes, and diagnostic entities of systemic autoimmunity. ES is past president of SLEuro, she was the chairman of the 13th European lupus meeting in Stockholm 2022. She is a member of the International Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) group and of several EULAR task force groups. She is the chairman of the national working group for improving the Swedish net based SLE quality registry.
