I am a physician-scientist with the training and expertise in both HIV and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease immunopathogenesis. The first major focus of my research is to understand the role of B cell perturbation and autoantibody production (current NIH R01 AI1288864). The second area is to understand the role of a “leaky” gut, systemic bacterial products and the microbiome in disease pathogenesis.
My laboratory has developed and conducted plasma microbial translocation and plasma microbiome in humans in vivo to study the interaction between microbial products released from the mucosa, microbiome, and human immunity (Cell & Mol Immunol, 2018; Microbiome, 2019; Arthritis & Rheumatology. 2019). We focus on the role of both quantity and quality of plasma microbial translocation in triggering the systemic immune perturbations, persistent immune activation and inflammation, as well as in contributing to disease pathogenesis.
