Dr. Baraf is a Special Volunteer at the NIH where he works with the rheumatology fellows at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease (NIAMS). He retired from Arthritis and Rheumatism Associates (ARA), in the Washington, DC area, in 2022 after 40+ years serving as a founding member and its managing partner.
In addition to teaching at NIAMS, Dr. Baraf holds academic appointments as Clinical Professor of Medicine at George Washington University in Washington, DC, and Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.
Dr. Baraf’s work as principal investigator on over 400 clinical trials across the spectrum of rheumatologic therapeutics has led to more than 100 abstracts and peer-reviewed papers and to presentations at national and international meetings.
Dr. Baraf has frequently been invited to speak at ACR, CSRO, state society meetings and rheumatology training programs on rheumatology practice management, gout and gout therapeutics.
He is a Master of the American College of Rheumatology. In 2014, Dr. Baraf was awarded the ACR’s Paulding Phelps Award. In 2022, the ACR honored him with the Innovation in Clinical Practice Award.
A graduate of the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, Dr. Baraf completed his internship and residency at the George Washington University and his fellowship training in rheumatology at Duke University.
