Dr. Camilla I Svensson received her Ph.D. in Molecular Pathology in 2005 from University of California, San Diego (UCSD) on work focused on spinal mechanisms of pain transmission. She undertook post-doctoral work centered on inhibitory regulation of intracellular signaling in rheumatoid arthritis at the Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology at UCSD. Dr. Svensson was recruited to the Karolinska Institutet, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in Stockholm in 2008, where she today is Professor of Cellular and Molecular Pain Physiology. She leads a research team exploring pain mechanisms in rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, utilizing both established and new models of these diseases as well as patient samples. Current projects are centered on the role of autoantibodies and associated inflammatory and non-inflammatory processes inducing and sustaining pain in rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. Furthermore, Prof. Svensson’s team is exploring how altered bone metabolism and activation of glial cells contribute to pain chronicity in rheumatic diseases. Dr. Svensson is funded by both the Swedish and European Research Council, the European Commission and the Family Lundblad foundation and she has received several prestigious awards and grants including the Ragnar Söderberg Award in Medicine, the Wallenberg Academy Fellow and Wallenberg Scholar Awards and the ERC Consolidator grant.
