This session will explore the oral health implications of rheumatologic diseases and their treatments. The aim is to spark a conversation between patients, dental providers, and the rheumatology community, and shed light on the importance of shared decision making through effective, comfortable, and transparent conversations. Qualitative data from patients and rheumatologists will be used to outline the current knowledge gaps and to include the perspective of a patient with lived experience undergoing dental treatment, including comprehensive dental care, orthodontics, and oral surgery. The focus will be on current examples, including planning for oral care and oral health complications. Additionally, the available information supporting oral healthcare recommendations for patients taking biologic agents, with a focus on the agents most commonly used in rheumatology, will be discussed. An existing model at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in the Department of Oral Medicine, a novel Personalized Care Suite, will be touched upon as a key takeaway. The audience will become familiar with the different focuses of this clinic and its approaches to individualizing treatment for patients with complex medical histories and other conditions that may impact dental treatment. The overall goal is to emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in this patient population by highlighting stakeholder perspectives and emphasizing the importance of oral care for optimal systemic health.
