This session will describe an evidence-based approach to giving high-quality written and verbal feedback to rheumatology fellows in the clinical setting, with an emphasis on assessment for learning and cultivating a growth mindset. We will introduce practical techniques and frameworks (e.g., keep/stop/start and ask-reflect-tell) to give meaningful, formative feedback in real time, using real-life examples. As an important part of feedback skills development, we will also focus on recognizing, addressing, and mitigating racial and gender bias in assessment. Finally, we will provide tools and materials (e.g., online video modules, workshop materials, posters and pocket cards) that rheumatologists can bring back to their home programs and institutions for ongoing professional development.
