Medical schools, residencies and fellowships have information silos, each tracking the attainment of educational milestones determined by curricula, educational philosophy, and accreditation standards and guidelines. As trainees transition between these stages of training, they should ideally build on platforms established in prior stages. Educators at each level carry dueling roles — to advocate and enhance placement in the next step of training, competing with accountability to identify and communicate gaps in skill acquisition. Standardized letters of evaluation are one strategy to effect handovers in a transparent and reliable manner. Letters written to support Electronic Residency Application Service applications are designed to focus on candidate strengths and minimize shortcomings. There may be a window to convey post-match information designed as a learning prescription for trainees and much needed guidance for receiving programs. The panel discussion will highlight advances in this area along with challenges and shortcomings of such an approach.
