The popular term 'imposter syndrome' refers to a feeling of persistent self-doubt and feeling like a fraud, not correlated to competence. Solutions are focused towards building resilience and confidence in the individuals affected. However, the speaker is often actually experiencing a credibility deficit, known has 'testimonial injustice'. Testimonial injustice occurs when the listener discounts the credibility of the speaker’s word due to prejudice about their social identity, and is often associated with gender, ethnicity, class, sexuality or religion. Solutions should be focused on eliminating implicit or explicit systematic bias within institutions, rather than focusing on individuals, to ultimately improve clinical and research culture.
