April (Jeong Min) Yu is a third-year rheumatology fellow at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She holds a BA in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University and her MD degree is from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. During her studies, she researched the effectiveness of a topically delivered nanoconstruct in reversing psoriatic skin lesions. In residency, under Dr. Caroline Jefferies' guidance, she delved into cutaneous autoimmunity and inflammation.
Notably, at the 2020 Society of General Internal Medicine California-Hawaii Regional Meeting, she secured third place for her work on skin inflammation genes and their impact on lupus-specific skin lesions in systemic lupus (SLE). She also identified increased expression of the folate membrane transporter, SLC19A1, in SLE patients' peripheral blood, suggesting its role in enhanced INFβ expression. Her findings earned her the Medical and Pediatric Resident Research Award from the Rheumatology Research Foundation, presented at the American College of Rheumatology 2020.
Currently working with Dr. Jessica Gordon, April assesses a patient-reported outcome for skin disease in systemic sclerosis. This research aims to provide evidence for its use. Additionally, she's pursuing Clinical and Translational Investigation master’s degree to advance her research career. Outside her professional life, April enjoys acrylic painting and hiking.
