Mental health problems, particularly anxiety and depression, are more common in children and adolescents with pediatric rheumatologic diseases than in healthy peers. Identifying these problems early on is important because they are known to negatively impact disease outcomes, including pain intensity and disease activity, as well as health-related quality of life, medication adherence, and healthcare utilization. Despite this, rates of routine mental health screening and treatment remain low in the pediatric rheumatology setting. Commonly cited barriers are insufficient mental health training amongst pediatric rheumatologists and limited in-clinic access to mental health professionals. To address this gap, this session will provide a 120-minute workshop that will train clinicians to utilize existing mental health screening and to identify and address mental anxiety and depression. Integrating mental healthcare into the pediatric rheumatology setting can improve mental health outcomes, reduce disparities, and enhance disease control.
