Melissa Flores, MPH, LCSW is the Asst. Director of the Office of Health Equity at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She supports strategic development and goals of the Office of Health Equity and oversees the collection, monitoring of race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and most recently, social determinants of health data collection throughout the institution. In her role, she works collaboratively across departments to explore, identify and address health disparities specific to orthopedic and rheumatology care. In addition, she creates educational materials to communicate to both patients and staff about various initiatives to assess and address diverse population needs, as well as community benefit and community service program initiatives and collaborations. She previously served as the Sr. Outcomes Manager of the Dept. of Social Work Programs for 5 years and the Social Work Program Coordinator of the Charla de Lupus (Lupus Chat)® Program for 4+ years, a national program offering people with lupus and their families peer health support and education in both English and Spanish. She coordinated all aspects of the program including the monthly Teen, Young Adult and Parent Support Group and provided psychosocial support to adult and pediatric patients with lupus and their loved ones. Ms. Flores received a Master of Social Work degree and a Master of Public Health from Columbia University.
