This session will give an overview of mentoring relationship development through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion and provide an opportunity to practice these discussions focused on establishing a solid foundation for an effective mentoring relationship with a mentee. The first half of the session will review the approach to considering individuals holistically (using the AAMC Experiences-Attributes-Metrics model as a guide) and focus on how to approach a new mentee. In this portion of the session, concepts of minority tax, gratitude tax, imposter syndrome, distance traveled, and power distance will be reviewed in the context of how they impact mentoring relationships. A structured framework for the relationship will be proposed with components of acknowledging differences, finding commonalities, developing shared goals, and communicating positive regard. In the second half of the session, participants will break into small groups to role play scenarios of mentor-mentee discussions, focusing on developing an approach to sharing and learning about each other as part of a sustainable and satisfying mentoring experience. At the end of the second portion, participants will return to the large group for report out and Q&A. Mentorship resources and materials will be shared with participants.
